So, you are welcome to read the interview with Paul Jansen - a talented web designer, Flat Icons owner. Paul has recently joined our team and already shared lots of interesting about inspiration, favorite web design trends, plans, and far more. We are sure you’ll like his interview and works. Let’s start!
Hello! Please introduce yourself. Where are you from? How did you start your career?
Hi! My name is Paul Jansen and I’m from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I’ve been an online entrepreneur since 2010 and started right after university, so never had a ‘proper’ job.
Please tell us about your brand and company - When it was created? How many people in your team? Are there any signs that make your brand and items unique and recognizable?
I run a portfolio of websites but I started the graphic design business in 2014. I actually took over the website flat-icons.com from its previous owner and build it out from 1 designer at the time to a team of 30 currently. We focus mostly on icon design and colored icons are our thing. At first, we only designed in a flat style, but we’ve expanded that to other styles.
How many people are engaged in icon set creation? How much time do you need to create a product that is ready for sale? What is the most complicated stage of preparing your product for sale?
We start the creation of a new set by researching topics. These can be hot and trending topics, but it can just as well mean that we look at our currently portfolio of sets and see what’s missing.
The next step is deciding on which icons the set will consist of. We use keyword tools like Ahrefs to check demand and decide which icons to include. We also research potential customers for a particular set and ask ourselves, ‘what would a customer like to see included?’ So, say we are creating an icon set ‘Marketing Agency Icons’, we’ll load up a ton of marketing agency websites and see which icons they use and what kind of concepts they talk about.
Then the actual design process starts. One of our designers will sketch the concepts and the same designer will digitalize the icon. The designer shows daily progress of the set to one of the senior designers who will mainly check the concepts and consistency in the set. When this phase is finished, the Quality Control Team comes in and checks each and every icon in several aspects. If all is good, the icons are exported to all the different file formats.
The last phase is creating previews, writing product descriptions and upload the set to the marketplaces we sell on and our own website. The whole process usually takes a few weeks from start to finish and there are more people working on a set than one might think!

How do you choose a topic for the next products?
I touched on it with the previous question but our favorite method for next product ideas is to look at what’s trending in the world and create an icon set for it. There were some trends that we spotted really fast like Cryptocurrency. This can definitely pay off!
What trends in web design inspire you? How do you implement them in the design of your items?
I’m not a designer myself but we have regular team meetings in which we discuss new design trends and how we can implement them. A discussion could start with one of the designers saying ‘I’m seeing this new color combination used more and more on Dribbble’. We then discuss if we can launch a new style with this color combination.
As for your plans, what results are you willing to achieve?
The icon market is really competitive, but I think there’s room for growth by getting creative, not only with new styles and topics but also with HOW you sell the icons. In 2019, we worked a lot on our processes and for 2020 we’re all set to grow our output. The goal is to grow revenue by 100%.
